Executives at Land Rover have stated that digital is a core element of its marketing strategy. The typical Land Rover buyer is tech-savvy and indexed high for mobile and tablet usage during the vehicle shopping process. To activate the interactive elements of the commercial, watchers must have a smartphone with which they can sync with the Race the Sun experience online. They can then swipe and tap their phones to give commands while a short film plays on the screen.
The Race the Sun ad starts with a suit-wearing mysterious man telling the hero and the Range Rover-owner that he has until sunset to make his move. The screen will then ask the user to sync a phone or tablet for gameplay by opening a mobile browser and entering a custom URL. The viewer then has the option of playing the game by interacting with their tablet, syncing their smartphone to their computer and using a keyboard, or simply by watching the film. Land Rover believes that the variety of options will allow users to interact in the way that best suits their interests.
