Back in 1989, Land Rover undertook a historic and ambitious task -- to take a number of new Range Rover vehicles for a 1,000 mile journey along previous uncharted territory and unpaved trails. Now that it's 2014, it's the 25th anniversary of this historic expedition, and Land Rover is set to celebrate the occasion by recreating the journey with a number of new Range Rover vehicles.

Here at your local home for Range Rover cars near Chicago, Land Rover Winnetka, we'll give you a little history lesson on the original Continental Divide expedition. Back in the 1980s, Land Rover vehicles were still making a name for themselves in the United States, as the name hadn't yet caught on for everyday Winnetka drivers. Land Rover was an automaker that mostly focused on campaigning numerous vehicles in rallies and endurance competitions, such as the Paris-Dakar Rally and the Camel Trophy. At this point, the automaker wasn't exactly aiming for the consumer sector.

However, this all changed with the 1989 Continental Divide expedition, which showed everybody that the Land Rover Range Rover was a vehicle that was excellent for off-roading. The journey navigated challenging terrain, most of which was made up of unpaved trails. The original route took place from Wyoming through northern New Mexico, which contains some of the most rugged roads in the United States. With the completion of this rally, Range Rover started to become more widely known among everyday drivers.

The recreation of this journey will be completed with a team of brand new and unmodified 2014 Range Rover vehicles, which will run the same route as the Range Rovers did in 1989. Meanwhile, come in and check out our huge Range Rover selection at our Winnetka dealership
