Here at Land Rover Northfield, we typically like to inform drivers near Winnetka, IL about new or upcoming Land Rover models. But we also believe that in order to understand a vehicle in its current iteration, you also have to understand its origins. At our dealership, one of our most popular vehicles is the 2017 Land Rover Discovery Sport. This rugged and luxurious SUV is one of the longest-running Land Rover vehicles, and it has gone through a number of changes through its long life.
The life of the Land Rover Discovery began in 1989, when the Discovery Series I was introduced into the United Kingdom. The automaker code-named the vehicle “Project Jay,” and the new model was based on the chassis and drivetrain of the Range Rover SUV, but with a lower price aimed at a larger market segment. Initially, the vehicle was only available in a three-door body style, but a five-door option became available in 1990. Much of the original vehicle’s interior was constructed from Sonar Blue plastic with map/magazine holding slots above the windscreen, hand-holds for rear passengers, and remote radio controls on the instrument cluster.
After the success of the Discovery Series I, Land Rover introduced the Discovery Series II in 1998. Land Rover promoted the SUV by stating that it had 720 differences from the previous iteration. This rugged SUV also proved to be a massive success, and just last year, the third and newest generation of the Land Rover Discovery was unveiled. This version leaves behind many of the design traditions of past iterations for a more modern design filled with cutting-edge technologies and safety features.
