If it wasn't already clear, Land Rover is an automaker that is at the forefront of cutting-edge technology. With a ton of helpful and innovative features on its current crop of vehicles, Land Rover is hard at work creating new technologies that are going to change the way you interact with your vehicle. We already covered the exciting pothold-avoidance technology, but the newest Land Rover feature might blow your mind even more. The engineers at Land Rover have built a prototype vehicle that allows users to control it with a smartphone app from outside the vehicle.

Here at your local Northfield Land Rover dealership, we read the story in “Wired” about this breakthrough, and it has us even more excited about the future of Land Rover. Up until now, most autonomous vehicle driving technology has focused on keeping the driver, the passengers, and other drivers on the road safe. Of course, there are other uses for autonomous driving as well, and this new Land Rover technology fits in right with the brand's off-road heritage.

Being able to control a Land Rover car from outside of it has more practicality than using it like you would a remote control car in a parking lot. Imagine a future where you take your Range Rover Sport off-roading and you need a view of where your car is going. Normally, when traversing unfamiliar territory, you'll have a passenger get out of the car and guide your car over rough terrain like rocks and streams. But if you're driving by yourself, the remote control technology allows you to be both spotter and driver. This feature could also play a handy role if somebody parks too close to you in a parking lot.
