Land Rover vehicles are revered for a lot of reasons, such as their cutting-edge technologies, powerful engines, and off-road capabilities. According to the latest news out of Land Rover headquarters, the British automaker is about to add a new dimension to its famous Range Rover line – electrification. With new federal regulations on gasoline and efficiency standards, drivers are looking for vehicles that are environmentally-friendly and even friendlier on their wallet, and Land Rover is responding to these wants with a new line of electric test concept vehicles.
The three new concept vehicles cover the entire electric vehicle segment with one plug-in hybrid, one hybrid, and one battery electric. While these vehicles are still in early development, we're still getting exciting about the possibilities of efficient new Land Rover SUVs here at Land Rover Northfield. Simply known as Concept, the new line of cars borrow their starting platforms from different variations of the Range Rover SUV.
Here's what Dr. Wolfgang Epple, director of research and technology for Land Rover had to say about the new project. “Technologies like these have already helped us reduce our fleet CO2 average by 25 percent in recent years. Our future vision is to continue to reduce emissions and improve fuel efficiency while still delivering the luxury, performance, refinement, and comfort our customers expect.” So far, engineers have already built an electric drive module that produces twice the power and torque of any electric-motor generator in production today. One of the prototype plug-in hybrids has a 296-horsepower gasoline engine combined with a 350-volt synchronous electric motor.
