Ever since its inception during World War II, Land Rover has always been an automaker focused on adventure and taking people to where the trail ends. Although recent iterations of Land Rover cars like the new Range Rover Sport near Northbrook have focused on providing drivers with more entertainment and convenience features for their journeys around town, the heart of Land Rover remains in the places that are off the beaten path. A few months ago, a suburban Burr Ridge, Illinois man the decision to push himself and his classic 1989 Land Rover Defender 110 to the limits by taking it on a road trip all across the United States.
Blake
Hennessey, a 32-year-old employment consultant living in Burr Ridge,
along with his buddy Rob Bedoe, decided to embark on the 30-day,
10,000-mile trip when they were planning on driving to a convention
in Arizona. They decided to take the extra step and cross a few spots
off the bucket list by driving to Arizona, up through California to
Seattle, and then back across the Rocky Mountains and the Great
Plains to Burr Ridge.
As
for their vehicle, the duo decided on the classic 1989 Land Rover
Defender 110 because, according to Hennessey, “Defenders are
four-wheel-drive go-anywhere, do-anything vehicles. Land Rover built
these trucks for over 68 years. You don’t have to worry about road
conditions or the weather. You just keep going.” For camping and
sleeping, they carried a tent on the top of their vehicle.
Hennessey’s next trip in his Land Rover is shaping up to be a
journey from Canada’s east coast to the Florida Keys.
