By this point, many automotive experts agree that self-driving, or autonomous cars are the future of driving. As one of the leading automakers in the world, Land Rover is hard at work at developing self-driving technologies for its vehicles, but it’s also taking these technologies a step further than the competition. Land Rover has always been known for its off-road-focused and durable SUVs, so its next logical step is creating autonomous off-road vehicles, which is exactly what it’s doing.

Here at Land Rover Northfield, we are thrilled to think about a new Land Rover for sale near Winnetka that has self-driving technology. Even though the technology is still at very early stages in its production, it’s impressive already. Before even beginning to invent autonomous technology, though, Land Rover already has put precursors to it in its 2016 Land Rover cars. For instance, Hill Descent Control, Terrain Response Control, surround-view cameras, and air suspension are all current technologies that are essentially autonomous. But these technologies aren’t enough, as Land Rover is looking to move from merely assistive drive technologies to fully autonomous ones.

One of the systems that Land Rover is developing is called Surface ID. This employs ultrasonic sensors to scan the way ahead. It then takes these findings and cross-references them with an internal library of scans or terrains, including gravel, sand, mud, grass, snow, and ice. The system then automatically adjusts the Terrain Response Control to gird the vehicle’s various systems for ideal performance on the upcoming surface, all without any driver interaction. Surface ID will also work on-road, detecting obstacles like black ice.
