Land Rover is an automaker that does a lot more than just make some of the most durable, luxurious cars in the world. The automaker’s newest venture is one that’s taking place nearby our Northfield Land Rover dealership, down at Navy Pier in Chicago. The event is the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series, of which Land Rover is an exclusive sponsor. The America’s Cup World Series will be taking place on June 10 to June 12 and will feature six teams from around the world.
If
you’re new to the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series, it is
a boat race with roots that trace back to the 1850s. In 1851, a
radical looking American schooner beat the British Royal Yacht in a
tremendous upset that symbolized the victory of the new world over
the old. The groundbreaking race was the birth of the America’s
Cup, which has taken place every few years since then. The 35th
America’s Cup program runs between 2015 and 2017 with a critical
stop taking place this upcoming weekend at Navy Pier.
So
what does this historic race have to do with Land Rover vehicles? In
July 2015, Land Rover announced that it would become both Title and
Exclusive Innovation Partner to Ben Ainslie Racing (BAR), one of the
participants in the boat race. The BAR team was conceived by
four-time Olympic gold medalist and 34th America’s Cup winner Sir
Ben Ainslie, with the long-term aim of bringing the America’s Cup
back home to Britain, where it originated in 1851. The team is made
up of some of the best British and international sailors, designers,
builders, and racing support.
